Kids grow so fast that a wardrobe full of one-off outfits barely gets worn before it's outgrown. A little capsule — a dozen pieces that all work together — means less washing pressure, easier mornings, and more wear from every piece before the next size up.
The 12-piece formula
- 4 tops — mostly plain or simple prints that go with everything. Start with soft everyday tees in colours that mix.
- 3 bottoms — elastic-waist pants or shorts in easy neutrals. Every top should work with every bottom.
- 2 one-and-done outfits — a dress or a matching set for days when you want zero decisions.
- 2 warm layers — one knit or cardigan, one jacket. Layers do more work than any single warm outfit.
- 1 special piece — something for birthdays and photos, chosen from our occasion edit, that still feels comfortable enough to actually play in.
Pick a palette, not outfits
The capsule trick is colour: choose two or three soft base colours (creams, sage, dusty blue) plus one fun accent, and everything pairs with everything. You stop matching outfits and start grabbing any top and any bottom — they just work.
Make it stretch across seasons
Australian weather rewards layering over replacing. A summer dress becomes an autumn outfit with a long-sleeve tee underneath and a cardigan over the top; shorts hand over to pants while the same tops carry on. (More on this in our layering guide.)
When to size up
Refresh the capsule when two things happen at once: sleeves are riding high and waistbands leave marks. Check each style's measurement chart before you buy — our size guide article walks through how to measure. Start small, buy pieces that earn their keep, and the whole wardrobe stays happily little — just like its owner.
